WHAT'S HAPPENING |
Worker Orientation Sessions Worker orientation sessions are provided at the workplace or other designated meeting sites. Prior to the layoff date, a team of service providers will meet with the dislocated workers in a group setting to provide information about available services. Information will be provided about Unemployment Insurance, COBRA benefits extension, and employment and training services. Case managers will be present to set appointments and initiate services.
Retraining Retraining is available to upgrade workers' skills in a rapidly changing job market. Tuition, books, and fees for qualified educational courses and programs is available, including up to two years of training at a vocational/technical college or university. Occupation-specific short term training and employer-based customized training are also available. Case managers will assist workers to coordinate unemployment benefits with training plans.
Employment Services Assistance in preparing for and conducting an effective job search is offered to dislocated workers. Resume writing, introduction and follow up materials, job application assistance, interviewing skills development, employer research, and career planning are among the services available. Services are offered in both group and individualized settings.
Support Services Subsidies are available for services related to employment search and approved training activities. These include assistance with child care, transportation, uniforms, equipment, and licensing fees.
The Trade Act of 1974 provides special assistance for workers who lose their jobs or whose hours of work and wages are reduced as a result of increased imports from, or shifts in production to, foreign countries. Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA) includes a variety of benefits and services to help trade-affected workers prepare for and obtain suitable employment as quickly as possible. It pays for expenses of job training, education, seeking work and relocating to accept new work. Workers may also receive extra weekly unemployment payments known as Trade Readjustment Allowances (TRA) after regular state unemployment insurance benefits have been paid.
